Minibus tout freed of rape charge
Curtis Sulker, called “Red Man”, was on Thursday afternoon acquitted of a rape charge by a 12-member jury.The unanimous not-guilty verdict was returned after two hours of deliberations at the Sexual Offences Court in Demerara. The particulars of charge detailed thatCurtis Sulker shielded his face before he gained his freedomSulker had allegedly engaged in sexual penetration with a 16-year female without her consent on September 7, 2014.Guyana Times understands that the former accused man who reportedly works as a minibus tout was a family friend of the then teenager. The allegations detailed that the man had taken the girl to the Botanical Gardens and carried out the act. However, the jury did not find the evidence pertaining to her story as credible and determined that the defendant was innocent of the alleged crime.Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall announced that he was free to go but Sulker who seemed surprised, sat down on the prisoner’s bench which prompted the Judge to re-state that he was freed. The former accused was represented by Attorney Clyde Forde, while Prosecutors Seeta Bishundial and Natasha Backer presented the State’s case.
