EPl: Struggling Norwich face Hammers test

first_imgNorwich City vs. West Ham Venue: Carrow Road Kick off: 12:30PMWest Ham United will be looking to boost their Premier League survival hopes and all but relegate Norwich City in the process in lunchtime’s clash at Carrow Road. The Hammers are four points above the relegation zone following a mixed run of form, while Norwich are 10 points from safety with four games to play.Last week’s impressive 3-2 win over London rivals Chelsea, secured through a late strike from Andriy Yarmalenko, was supposed to have kickstarted West Ham’s campaign. However, a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United four days later was a case of an opportunity lost, with United twice squandering a lead against opponents with little left to play for. Then came Wednesday’s 1-0 home loss to Burnley – Jay Rodriguez’s fine header shortly before half time condemning the Hammers to a fourth defeat in six matches.Thankfully for United, the teams below them have also struggled to pick up points since last month’s restart, so there is still a four-point buffer on Aston Villa. The Villans, as well as Bournemouth who are also on 27 points, have games in hand to play against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur respectively on Thursday. There is no doubt that David Moyes’s side are still very much in a relegation battle following their midweek reverse to Burnley, with four big matches to come.United have Norwich, Watford and Aston Villa to face in their four remaining games – three of only four teams currently below them in the table – plus a trip to in-form Manchester United. It is now effectively a battle between four teams for the two remaining relegation spots given that Norwich have already accepted their fate. The Canaries are rock bottom of the division, as they have been since pre-Christmas, and need to win all four of their remaining matches to have any realistic hope of staying up. With trips to Chelsea and Manchester City still to come, it is fair to say that Championship football will be returning to Carrow Road next season.Daniel Farke’s men are now playing for pride, and this visit of West Ham does at least offer them a chance to register just a sixth victory of a disappointing campaign.Four of those wins have come at home, giving City the worst home record in the top flight.Norwich City possible XI: Krul, Aarons, Klose, Godfrey, Lewis, Vrancic, McLean, Buendia, Stiepermann, Hernandez, Pukki. West Ham United possible XI: Fabianski, Fredericks, Diop, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Soucek, Rice, Noble, Yarmolenko, Antonio, Bowen.RelatedPosts EPL: Gunners gun for West Ham scalp EPL: Red Devils attack Palace Leeds host first Premier League game after 16 years Tags: Carrow RoadEnglish Premier LeagueEPLNorwich CityWest Ham Unitedlast_img read more

Gussie Johns wins Defensive Player of the Week

first_imgJunior goalie Gussie Johns was named the MPSF Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after a strong showing against No. 6 Colorado last Friday. Johns made nine saves and picked up three ground balls in USC’s 11-5 victory at the Coliseum, shutting out the Buffaloes during the entire second half. The junior goalie is no newcomer to accolades. This is Johns’ second MPSF Defensive Player of the Week award of the year and her fifth career Player of the Week honor. Johns leads the country in goals against average (6.69) and is fourth in the nation in ground balls per game (4.0). Johns also continues to add to her program-record 289 career saves and 156 career ground balls. Monday marked the fifth consecutive week that a USC women’s lacrosse player took home a weekly conference award. Senior attacker Michaela Michael leads the way, winning four straight MPSF Offensive Player of the Week awards — a streak that ended this week. Freshman midfielder Kerrigan Miller took home Rookie of the Week honors in March, and freshman midfielder Kaeli Huff also received the award two weeks ago. Johns’ accolade was her first since being named Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 20.Johns has gained national attention for her play in net for the Trojans. After dominating at USC during her first two collegiate seasons, Johns was named to the United States’ final roster in January for the 2017 FIL Women’s Lacrosse World Cup, which will be held in Guildford, England this summer.Johns is one of just two current student-athletes on the national team, along with North Carolina junior midfielder Marie McCool. Also joining Johns on Team USA is Devon Wills, the Trojans’ associate head coach and defensive coordinator.Next, USC will look to extend its six-game winning streak when the team travels to Stanford on Friday. A victory over the Cardinal would clinch the first seed in the MPSF tournament, which will be hosted at McAlister Field beginning April 27. Another win over UC Davis on Sunday would also set a new MPSF record for consecutive conference wins. While individual recognition is nice, Johns and thenow-sixth-ranked Trojans will strive for a conference title as well as the ultimate goal: the first national championship in the program’s five-year history.last_img read more

Jetstar HK prepares for takeoff

first_imgThe joint venture between China Eastern Airlines and Qantas Group, Jetstar Hong Kong, will commence services by the end of this year or early next year. The 50/50 partnership low-cost carrier is awaiting approval after applying for its operator’s certificate from the Hong Kong Government, according to Air Transport World. China Eastern chairman Liu Shaoyong said China’s low-cost carrier element is lacking and needs further development. “The operating environment for domestic carriers still needs to be improved.” China Eastern managing director Ma Xulun said the carrier will have its work cut out but was confident in the new Hong-Kong based carrier’s capabilities. “Low-cost carriers account for more than a 25% share of the global air transport market and the figure is more than 33% in Southeast Asia, while comparably speaking this figure is less than 5% in China.” High import taxes for foreign-made aircraft and a shortage of pilots and airports are just some of the challenges faced by low-cost carriers throughout China.China’s single current low-cost carrier, Shanghai-based Spring Airlines, has been turning a profit since its beginnings in 2004.
