Child Poverty report card says Fort St. John has lowest rate in BC

first_imgAccording to BC Children and Youth Advocacy Coalition First Call‘s report card of child poverty in BC, while the province ranked the second-highest rate of child poverty, Fort St. John has remained the lowest ranking community in the province at 12 per cent.The report recorded 780 children living in poverty in Fort St. John in the year 2013, and the Peace River Regional District had the second lowest rate of all the districts, with 15.8 per cent — behind the East Kootenays Regional District with 15.5 per cent.Metro Vancouver is the highest ranking BC region for child poverty – with 51 per cent of BC’s children living in poverty.- Advertisement -Outside of Metro Vancouver, the community of Duncan on Vancouver Island ranks next, with 31 per cent.BC’s capital Victoria saw a relatively-low rate, with 16 per cent, as the second lowest rate following Fort St. John.The report makes calls for action and recommends the Federal and Provincial governments make big changes, including increasing the minimum wage to a sufficient living wage,  redesign the BC Early Childhood Tax, and enhance maternity and parental leave.Advertisementlast_img read more
