Ravena, Teng relish chance to pay it forward as coaches in NBTC All-Star

first_imgSports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next He recalled the humble beginnings of the NBTC, now on its 11th year, before it turned into the country’s version of “March Madness,” the big dance in the US NCAA.“The NBTC was a small group before where it was just a training camp. There wasn’t even any madness in MOA. But now, with the development of coach Eric Altamirano, coach Alex Compton, and all the regional directors of NBTC, they come together once a year to focus in and help evolve this young guys  to experience something they haven’t experienced before and I‘m very blessed to be part of this program.”Teng, meanwhile, is hoping to return again next year, not only to help in the training program but also to avenge his loss to Ravena.“Next year, I’ll coach here again,” he said with a smile. Ravena once again claimed bragging rights over Teng as they called the shots for the standouts from some of the country’s top highschool basketball teams. The two former collegiate stars were happy to have been given a chance to pay it forward to these budding ballers, and share their knowledge even just for this game.“It’s a great experience for me. I learned a lot today and it was really fun. I’ve been here before and I know how it feels to have this opportunity to be watched all over the country and showcase our talents,” said Teng. “We’re all blessed here and I told them that whatever path they take in their future in basketball, they just have to keep on working hard. That’s the secret of all successful basketball players.”Ravena, for his part, is proud to have bore witness to the growth of the NBTC, which gave an opportunity for players even from far-flung cities to showcase their skills under the bright lights.“It feels great knowing that I was part of the pioneer group of NBTC a decade ago. It’s just an amazing feeling being able to see great talent from the provinces and here in Metro Manila and it’s good for them to accept and be grateful being in this kind of atmosphere at a very young age.ADVERTISEMENT Nadine Lustre’s phone stolen in Brazil For the complete collegiate sports coverage including scores, schedules and stories, visit Inquirer Varsity. DUBLIN BOSS EXPECTS DONEGAL TO FIRE ON ALL CYLINDERS

first_imgDublin manager Jim Gavin is wary of facing Donegal in the Allianz Football League tomorrow as he expects the All-Ireland champions to use the match to launch their championship campaign.Gavin’s side have already qualified for the league semi-finals while Donegal have yet to ensure their Division 1 status for 2013. However, there is still a possibility the All-Ireland champions could meet Dublin in the last four is results go their way.Sunday’s clash at Ballybofey is expected to be a tight affair with both sides going for the victory and Gavin believes the team with the best defence will prevail.“Sunday’s about two teams who want to come away with a result but at the same time want a performance,” Gavin explained. “After the weekend we have eight weeks to go to the Championship and Donegal have seven. “They used this same fixture last year to beat Cork and to launch their Championship campaign and I don’t think Sunday will be any different.“There are two very well-organised defences so it’ll probably be a low-scoring game but entertaining nonetheless.“They’re very structured and very organised in defence. Obviously Jim and Rory [Gallagher] have been with them for a few years now. They’ve got some top class forwards in Murphy, [Colm] McFadden, [Paddy] McBrearty and [Mark] McHugh.”The trip to Donegal is only the second time in this year’s league that Dublin have travelled outside the captain and it is one Gavin is looking forward to as it gives him the chance to spend some time with his squad. “This weekend marks the fourth month we’ve been with the squad and a lot of work has been done but there is more to do,” Gavin is quoted as saying in the Irish Sun.“Travelling to Ballybofey is a great opportunity with the players. You have some contact time and sometimes it’s nice to travel. I’ve always enjoyed travelling away with Dublin teams – you get time with the players.”The conclusion of the All-Ireland Club Championship means Gavin is finally able to call on players from Ballymun Kickhams and he is looking forward to bringing them into his team.“Even though they didn’t get a chance to play in the O’Byrne Cup and early National League rounds, certainly in the remaining two games we have in the league we will try and introduce them as best we can in a balanced approach,” he added.DUBLIN BOSS EXPECTS DONEGAL TO FIRE ON ALL CYLINDERS was last modified: April 7th, 2013 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:BallybofeydonegaldublinNational Leaguelast_img read more

Granit Xhaka ‘devastated and sad’ after Crystal Palace game, says Unai Emery

first_imgUnai Emery said Granit Xhaka is “devastated” after his traumatic departure from the Emirates Stadium pitch on Sunday but the Arsenal captain’s situation remains unresolved as the club give him time to recover his frame of mind.Xhaka was loudly jeered off during the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace and swore at the crowd as he left the field, gesturing and removing his shirt in the process. It has cast his club captaincy, and future at Arsenal, into doubt. Emery said no decisions have been made and that, even though he thinks Xhaka should apologise for his actions, the player is yet to offer any public contrition. No punishment has been handed down either at this stage, even though Xhaka is expected to be fined. Topics Share on Facebook Share on WhatsApp Share on Pinterest Share on Messenger Granit Xhaka a lightning rod for Arsenal’s drift under Unai Emery Share on LinkedIn Reuse this content Arsenal Share via Email Share on Twitter Read more news “He is now devastated – devastated and sad,” Emery said. “We spoke yesterday and also on Sunday night. This morning he trained as normal with the group but he is devastated and sad about the situation.“He knows he was wrong. He was wrong and he feels it inside very deeply. But that is normal as a human. You need, and every player needs, the supporters’ support.”Arsenal are concerned about Xhaka, sensing his unhappiness had been building ever since he was booed by a section of supporters against Aston Villa in September. It was a precursor to Sunday’s events but there has also been a spike in online harassment of the Switzerland midfielder in recent weeks and his actions on Sunday have been interpreted as an outburst of festering frustration.Xhaka feels particularly hurt because, from his perspective, his commitment to the club has been unstinting. He is frequently the first player to arrive at the training ground and the last to leave, even though he became a father for the first time earlier this month. He is seen as a unifying figure within the dressing room and Arsenal are keen to give him as much time as he requires to frame any response to his situation. They will make counselling available if Xhaka deems it necessary.None of this changes the fact there is an acknowledgment the furore cannot be allowed to slide. No apology has been forthcoming from Xhaka, against the advice of Emery and others in the Arsenal hierarchy, and his only visible action has been to change the profile picture on his Instagram account from one of him wearing the Arsenal armband to one of him captaining his country.“Yes, I think when we make individual mistakes we need to make apologies for the circumstances,” Emery said. “I prefer to do that. We suggest to him to do it.”Emery refused to put further pressure on Xhaka to make his peace with the fans, reiterating that the player is “not ready” to say sorry and saying there is no need to express contrition to his teammates or the coaching staff.“I don’t need his apology,” he said. “He is now very down and we need to support him. I don’t need his apology to me now. I know, he knows, he was wrong but he is devastated and the first thing is to raise him up.”Likewise, any decision about disciplinary procedures will be made later. “I think we can [later] speak about the same,” Emery said. “We are in the first step after his mistake. Now is to recover him as a person.”In line with that outlook, Emery said any discussion about Xhaka’s continued captaincy will be taken “step by step” and he did not wish to broach the topic. He spent 10 minutes with Josh Kroenke in the dressing room after the Palace game and suggested the Arsenal director supports his management of the problem.“My ideal future is to watch Xhaka playing again and every supporter supporting him,” Emery said. “I don’t know if I can or will achieve it but this is my ideal.”Xhaka will not be involved in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup fourth-round tie at Liverpool but that decision had been taken before Sunday. Mesut Özil will travel, though, ending a run of six absences from the match-day squad and Emery said the playmaker could take the captain’s armband at Anfield.“I’m not thinking exactly yet, but we are going to decide the first XI and [whether] he’s in the first XI,” he said. “It depends on who else plays. He could be [captain], yes.”“We have had this morning a very good conversation, Mesut and me, and I said to him I haven’t changed my idea about him … It was a very good conversation and he’s in the group [for the Liverpool game].”last_img read more

THE 101 BEST TORONTO SONGS OF 2018 PLUS A FEW MORE

first_img Login/Register With: Facebook Toronto is a huge city with a diverse set of cultural influences and a variety of interlocking arts scenes. Even considering that, we’re hitting above our weight class when it comes to music. Whittling NOW’s list down to our 10 best local albums was hard enough (which is why we also published our critics’ personal lists), but even deciding our 101 best Toronto songs was tough this year.Weekly throughout the year, we’ve been making 20-song playlists of the best local music of the week (it’s called #NOWplaying, and you can subscribe here). The best of the best ended up here, in the 101 best Toronto songs of 2018 playlist. There are major pop hits (Drake and the Weeknd, hello again) to future pop superstars (hey Jessie Reyez) and all corners of the hip-hop scene, from Regent Park to Parkdale. There’s some hardcore, some thrash and death metal, some techno and house, some folk and country, some operatic neo-classical ethnomusicology – there are all kinds of music in the city, and we tried to feature as much of it as we can.The only real rule to this Spotify playlist is that each artist could only be represented once (with a few little exceptions here and there). It’s been arranged to flow for close to seven hours, so you can start at the top and let it play through. Or hit play anywhere and listen for a while. Hit shuffle if you want to, and see what gems you dig up. Advertisement LEAVE A REPLY Cancel replyLog in to leave a comment center_img Advertisement Advertisement Twitterlast_img read more
