UCLA’s Steve Alford Receives Big Ten Club’s Person of the Year Award at Tournament House Event

An Olympic gold medalist at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, Alford helped Indiana win the 1987 NCAA Championship in addition to being a two-time first-team All-American, a three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection and the Big Ten MVP.The Big Ten Club has existed in southern California for over 80 years connecting conference graduates and offering members benefits, including events that highlight a long relationship with the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association.Previous Big Ten Club Person of the Year awardees have included the likes of visionaries and legends such as John Wooden, Tex Winter, Franco Harris, Bob Hope, Keith Jackson, Barry Alvarez, Archie Griffin, Mark Spitz, Drew Brees, Mark Murphy, 2014 winner Bob Miller and others.As a collegiate head coach, Alford has most recently led UCLA to consecutive NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 trips and one Pac-12 Tournament title (2014). His coaching credentials also include two Mountain West Conference championships, two Big Ten Tournament championships and two Heartland Conference championships.Alford’s teams have qualified for the postseason 19 times, including nine NCAA Division I Tournament berths. He has led his teams to the postseason in 14 of the last 15 seasons and has reached the 20-win plateau in 13 of his 20 years at the NCAA Division I level. Alford has coached his teams to at least 28 wins in three of the last four seasons and to at least 22 victories the last eight years.In addition, he has recorded more NCAA victories (513) as a collegiate head coach, age 50 or younger, than any other head coach in the nation. Alford, who turned 50 on Nov. 23, 2014, began his collegiate coaching career at the age of 26 at Manchester College.The annual Big Ten Person of the Year Dinner is a celebration honoring the successes and achievements of a Big Ten alumnus who has risen to the highest ranks within their respective field and continues to carry themselves in a manner representative of the Big Ten Conference and Club.
